District 35
The 35th Senate District encompasses parts of Westchester County, including the city of Yonkers, Greenburgh and Mount Pleasant. Democrats maintain a sizeable and growing voter enrollment advantage in the district, and have outperformed Republicans up and down the ballot in recent cycles. Despite that, a Democrat has only represented the district since 2006, when Andrea Stewart-Cousins defeated Republican Nicholas Spano.
Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Democrat
Andrea Stewart-Cousins was elected to the New York State Senate in 2006 to represent Greenburgh, Mount Pleasant and Yonkers, and currently serves as the Chairwoman of the Local Governments Committee.
During her time in office, she successfully fought for unprecedented levels of additional funding for Yonkers city services and schools, and ensured that State foundation aid to Westchester schools saw the highest increases in the last decade. She has also introduced and passed an Election Reform Legislation Package, and co-sponsored legislation to make permanent the Power for Jobs program.
Senator Stewart-Cousins is an advocate for human rights, quality education, tax relief, accessible and affordable health care, youth development, environmental protections, and, making government more open, transparent and accountable to all of our citizens. Her belief that creating change locally affects changes on the State level has driven her legislative and policy agenda, at home and in Albany.
