District 39
The 39th Senate District encompasses parts of Orange and Ulster counties, including the cities of Newburg, Blooming Grove, Kingston, and Esopus, and the town of Woodsbury, Cornwall, Crawford, Monroe, Plattekill and Marlborough. In the last decade, Democrats surpassed Republicans in voter enrollment in the district. Democratic candidates performed well at the top of the ticket in recent years, though Republican candidates fared better in down-ballot elections.
William Larkin, Republican
As a twenty-year incumbent, William Larkin supported the failed leadership of the Pataki/Bruno era, and helped create Albany’s culture of deals, deficits and dysfunction. Larkin is a tax-and-spend Republican and during his twenty years in office the state budget almost tripled in size.
