District 41

The 41st Senate District encompasses all of Columbia County and portions of Dutchess County including Poughkeepsie, Fishkill, Rhinebeck and Washington Township. In the last ten years Democrats surpassed Republicans in voter enrollment in the district, and Democratic candidates performed well at the top of the ticket. The results of down-ballot Congressional and Assembly races in the district are mixed. Republican Senator Steve Saland currently represents the district.

Steve Saland, Republican

A twenty-year incumbent, Steve Saland supported the leadership of convicted felon Joe Bruno and helped to create Albany’s culture of deals, deficits and dysfunction. He is a tax-and spend Republican who voted over 378 times to raise state and local taxes, taking almost $18 billion out of the pocket books of hard working New Yorkers. Since his election, the state spending increased by 150%, rising from $46 billion in 1990 to $116 in 2008. Rather than reach out to work across the aisle on critical issues that affect his constituents, he toed the GOP party line and blamed Democrats for Albany’s dysfunction.
