District 43
The 43rd Senate District encompasses all of Rensselaer County and portions of Saratoga County, including parts of Saratoga Springs and Mechanicville. Republicans have a sizeable enrollment advantage in the district, though Democrats have cut that advantage in half over the last decade. Despite that advantage, Democratic candidates at the top of the ballot have performed well in the district and Obama defeated McCain in SD-43 during the 2008 election. Democratic Congressional and Assembly candidates have also performed well in the district in recent cycles. Republican Roy McDonald currently represents the district.
Roy McDonald, Republican
Senator McDonald is the hand picked successor to convicted felon and former Republican Leader Joe Bruno who previously represented the district. During the current term he has participated in the Republicans’ “do-nothing“ strategy, and has failed to work with Democrats in a bipartisan fashion to solve the issues facing the state.
