District 44
The 44th Senate District encompasses all of Schenectady, Fulton and Montgomery Counties, and portions of Saratoga County including parts of Saratoga Springs and Ballston. Republicans maintain a voter enrollment advantage in the district, though Democrats have cut that advantage in half over the last decade. Democratic candidates at the top of the ticket performed well in the district in recent years, though down ballot Congressional and Assembly races are dominated by Republicans.
Hugh Farley, Republican
As a thirty-four year incumbent, Hugh Farley supported the failed leadership of the Pataki/Bruno era and helped to create Albany’s culture of deals, deficits and dysfunction. He is a tax-and-spend Republican, voting for hundreds of state and local tax increases and fees during his time in office. Under Farley’s leadership, state spending rose by 150% in the last 15 years alone.
