District 50
The 50th Senate District encompasses parts of Onondaga County, including parts of Syracuse, Van Buren Township, Onondaga and Skaneateles. Over the last decade, Democrats have whittled a sizeable Republican enrollment advantage down to parity. In recent election cycles Democrats performed well at the top of the ticket, and even edged out Republicans in some down ballot Congressional and Assembly races.
John DeFrancisco, Republican
As an eighteen-year incumbent, John DeFrancisco supported the failed leadership of the Pataki/Bruno era, and helped create Albany’s culture of deals, deficits and dysfunction. He is a tax-and-spend Republican who has voted hundreds of times to increase taxes and fees. Since his election in 1992, state spending more than doubled from $52 billion to over $116 billion. In 2010, he voted with fellow Republicans to kill the strongest ethics reform bill in a generation.
