District 51
The 51st Senate District encompasses all of Herkimer, Cortland and Otsego Counties, and portions of Chenango, Tompkins, Schoharie and Green Counties. Republicans maintain a sizeable voter enrollment advantage in the district, though Democrats have cut that advantage by 1/3 in the last decade. In recent elections, Republican candidates outperformed Democrats up and down the ballot in the district. Republican Senator James Seward represents the district.
James Seward, Republican
An incumbent with twenty-six years in the state senate, James Seward supported the failed leadership of the Pataki/Bruno era, helped create Albany’s culture of deals, deficits and dysfunction. He is a tax-and-spend Republican who has voted for hundreds of tax and fee increases, and almost tripled state spending during his time in office. In 2010, he joined with fellow Republicans in voting against the strongest ethics reform bill in a generation.
