District 53
The 53rd Congressional District encompasses all of Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben and Yates Counties, and portions of Tompkins County in including Ithaca. Republicans in the district maintain a sizeable but shrinking enrollment advantage. In recent elections, Democrats have generally outperformed Republicans at the top of the ticket, while Republicans have won down ballot Assembly races in the district.
Thomas O'Mara, Republican
In 2010 Republican Thomas O'Mara replaced retiring Republican State Senator George Winner in the 53rd District.
