District 54
The 54th Senate District encompasses all of Seneca and Wayne Counties, and portions of Cayuga, Monroe, Ontario and Tompkins Counties, including Auburn, Webster, Geneva and Lansing. Republicans maintain a sizeable but shrinking enrollment advantage over Democrats in the district. The parties generally split elections up and down the ballot in recent years, though Republicans Assembly candidates still outperformed their Democratic counterparts. Republican Senator Michael Nozzolio represents the district.
Michael Nozzolio, Republican
As a seventeen-year incumbent, Michael Nozzolio supported the failed leadership of the Pataki/Bruno era, and helped create Albany’s culture of deals, deficits and dysfunction. He is a tax-and-spend Republican who voted to raise taxes hundreds of times. During his tenure, state spending increased from $54 billion to over $116 billion. In 2010, he joined fellow Republicans to kill the strongest ethics reform legislation in a generation.
