District 55

The 55th Senate District encompasses portions of Monroe County including East Rochester, Irondequoit, Mendon, Penfield, Perinton, Pittsford, Riga and Wheatland. In the last decade, Democrats surpassed Republicans in voter enrollment and currently maintain a slim advantage over the GOP. Democratic candidates generally outperformed Republican candidates up and down the ticket in recent elections, however Republican Senator James Alesi currently represents the district.

James Alesi, Republican

As a fourteen-year incumbent, James Alesi supported the failed leadership of the Pataki/Bruno era, and helped create Albany’s culture of deals, deficits and dysfunction. As a tax-and-spend Republican, Alesi has voted for hundreds of tax and fee increases, and state spending increased from $63 billion to over $116 billion during is time in the majority. In 2010, he voted with fellow Republicans to kill the strongest ethics reform legislation in a generation.
