Real Tax Relief for All New Yorkers
New Yorkers shoulder an overwhelming and unfair tax burden that is stifling small businesses, hurting families, and making New York and unaffordable state in which to live and work.
According to the Tax Foundation, New Yorkers faced the highest state and local tax burden in the nation for all but four years during the period between 1977 and 2008. Three of New York’s downstate counties are among the top ten most taxed in the nation. Upstate and in Western New York, many homeowners face the highest property tax rate as percentage of their home value in the nation.
From the North Country to the tip of Long Island, our citizens are being taxed out of their homes and farms.
The New York Senate Dems are determined to alleviate that burden and provide real tax relief for all New Yorkers. Here are just a few of the ways we are working to put money back in the pockets of middle class taxpayers, strengthen our economy and make New York an affordable place to live and work.
- Within the first 90 days of taking the majority, the New York Senate Dems created the new Select Committee on Taxation to address structural tax issue for the first time with a goal of creating a stronger, more stable revenue structure for the state.
- Fair Share Tax Reform: We passed a progressive tax reform that protected 96% of New Yorkers from tax increases, while preventing cuts to education, healthcare and law enforcement funding.
- We continued $3 billion in property tax relief for New Yorkers, including Basic STAR, Senior STAR and NYC PIT credits.
- We passed a middle class circuit breaker to expand property tax relief to New Yorkers earning up to $250,000 per year.
- We’ve passed legislation to reduce mandates on school districts and consolidate local government services to drive down expenses and reduce the pressure on property taxes.
