Happy New Year! I wish you and your families a year of happiness, health and success.
For us, 2013 certainly ended with a bang!
When I was appointed DSCC Chair in December 2010, our campaign committee was over $3 million in debt. Since then, we’ve worked diligently to get our financial house in order. Now, I’m pleased to report that we’ve entered 2014 completely debt free and in a better position than ever to win the fight over our State’s future.
Even though we were outspent 3 to 1 last cycle, Senate Democrats picked up 4 new seats in an unprecedented landslide. We won each and every seat in which we invested your contributions. These new legislators are now bringing much needed change to Albany and, under the leadership of Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, we are working with Governor Andrew Cuomo to create jobs, reform government, protect reproductive rights and provide a fair, equal wage to working men and women alike. I am excited about the new candidates we will support this year who want to be part of that change.
Meanwhile, the Senate GOP is struggling and their incumbents are leaving the legislature in droves. On New Years Eve, Senator Chuck Fuschillo announced his resignation and shortly before that, his Long Island colleague, Senator Lee Zeldin, announced he will not run for another term. Yet another Long Islander, Senator Jack Martins may run for Congress and Senator Greg Ball, a leader in charge of the Senate Republicans’ 2014 re-election efforts, is actively considering walking away this year. Talk about jumping from a sinking ship!
In 2014, we will elect and re-elect Democrats who will bring change to Albany and get our State back to work for all New Yorkers. I hope we can continue to count on your help in the important work of changing the way business is done in Albany.
