New York Senate Dems Take Bold Stand for Students and Families
May 29, 2010Republicans Again Say "No" To Reform
(New York, NY) – By passing a landmark charter reform bill today, Senate Democrats demonstrated the leadership New York needs -- voting to more than double the allowable number of charter schools and to ban private companies from profiting off students.
In a unanimous vote of all the Senate Democrats, the measure now sets New York up to receive $700 million in crucially needed Race to the Top funds. Sadly, a majority of Republicans voted against the needs of New York's students –and bizarrely put at risk the federal funding.
"Senate Democrats have been leading the fight to ensure that New York obtains this federal funding," said Executive Director Josh Cherwin, New York Senate Dems. "The Republican Senators that voted against the bill are more interested in protecting special interest than helping New York's children."
Earlier this year Republican's took a different tone, suggesting that New York needed to raise the cap on charter school. Today's voted is just more of the same from New York¹s Republican Party: say "No" for the sake of saying no.
"Earlier today Senate Democrats restored funding to our state parks and reined in polluters." said Cherwin. "Republican's stood in the way just because they could. Now they are doing the same with our state's children."
