Statement from John L. Sampson on the Politics of Bigotry
Mar 18, 2010“The diversity that makes New York the greatest state in the nation is what makes Steve Levy unqualified to lead us.
“As the son of immigrants and as a father I'm offended by the hate-mongering rhetoric Steve Levy uses to catch quick headlines. The politics of bigotry has no place in reasoned public discourse. It will not put an unemployed worker back on the job, reduce a family's unbearable tax burden, or reign in out of control spending. It will only tear us apart.
“My parents came to New York in search of a better life for themselves and their children. They found it here, and now I'm working with my colleagues in government to make that dream a reality for all New Yorkers. Steve Levy is a nightmare who is attacking the values and history of our state just to win an election.
“Steve Levy has forgotten what all real New Yorkers know: New York is where dreams flourish, diversity fuels innovation, and opportunity comes not from the color of your skin, but the content of your head and heart. How can someone who hates so many New Yorkers pretend he is the best person to lead us?
“I believe in New York and all her people. I believe in the politics of hope, not bigotry. I believe our best days are ahead of us if we just lay partisanship aside and work together. For these reasons I know New York will reject Steve Levy just as he rejects the people who have defined our state for almost 400 years.”
